School is back in session!

Sorry about being so late in posting. So many things needing to be done come September! Welcome back to all the students and staff! Welcome to all the NEW students and of course, new Principal Mrs. Luporini, and Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Petty ! As many of you know, there is a teach-only job action taking place through-out BC with the Teacher's Union. What this means to us, is that the communication system between the Administration and the staff will be limited. The teachers are still doing what they do best: Teaching Our Children. But any type of communication must be one-on-one. Mass information, such as news letters and lunch orders, must be dealt with individually without the teacher's involvement. That means us. The volunteers at the school... Which also means we need more volunteers! Please call the office if you would like to help out in this capacity. An easy task either first thing in the morning (lunch orders) or last thing of the day when there is a news letter or such) Speaking of news letters.... Did you receive your PAC news letter?? As Planners have not been given out yet, the routine of bringing items home hasn't been re-enforced yet. PAC members handed each child a News Letter this afternoon. In it was information on our Shopping Coupons, the Receipt Race, Family Fun Night, the new FaceBook page, request for Earthquake kits, School Store info (including the need for more volunteers there!) and reminders to Parents of the regular goings on. If you did not receive a news letter, please send your child to the office side window to request one. The Facebook page, as well as this Blog, will also keep you up-to-date. See side panel for up-coming events Also, just a reminder that the first PAC meeting of the year will be September 21st at 7:00. Free babysitting will be provided if needed. Elections will not be until October 19th.

Bake Sale for OSCAR

Just a reminder that there is a bake sale at the school, this Thursday during lunch, to raise money for the OSCAR DORVAL FUND... Oscar is a local little 3 year old boy battling cancer right now.

Three students had a bake sale last month to raise money and a few children over-indulged... Good for the fund, not good for the other students who never got to purchase. Mr H sent out a telephone message to parents that if they wished to contribute, more cupcakes would be appreciated. SuperValu has even offered mixes! So if you have a few extra moments tonight, feel free to bake away! Not a baker?  Please lend your child .50 cents or $1.00 to buy a cupcake or two.  They feel great pride in being able to help out, if even in a small way!   Let's have lots of cupcakes for all, and lots of funding to little Oscar and his family!

lost & Found

I cannot post Flickr for some reason. The L&F has been removed from the school. I have it at my home. More pix will be taken and I will figure out this FLICKR thing once and for all. I will also post quick descriptions in the meanwhile. No good deed goes unpunished!

upcoming events

Did you get your phone call yesterday? The Lost & Found pile has gotten out of control, and will be dispersed of on Friday... I have tried to post pictures on the blog, but Flickr doesn't seem to like me, and it takes FOREVER to post each picture. I will ask Mr H if I can take and sort the clothes on Monday, and try new pix. Will see what I can do. Next Friday is report card day! The 16th and 17th are early dismissal days so the parents can set up interviews with the teachers if need be. While not required, it is good to take advantage of this one on one if you would like to give or get feedback regarding your child.

New LOST and FOUND Section

Just to update that I will be posting (as time permits) pictures of items on the Lost & Found rack at the school.  I highly recommend that you check these photos out weekly, and/or sift through the ever-growing pile in the hall regularly.  I will be posting and dating the photos and every two months or so, the items will go to the thrift store (or to another charity, if needed)  At (school) year end, they will all be GONE.  Last year, my son 'lost' his new baseball hoodie, with his name embroidered on the side.  It was on the rack the whole time, and got donated at the end of the school year.  I wish someone had taken the time to do something like this, as I didn't even know it was missing... So PLEASE, even if you don't think your child is missing anything, take the time to look.  You never know... That Billabong or LuLu  might not be hiding at the back of his/her closet!

The Great BC Shake Out

For those of you that have concerns about the looming threat of earthquakes in our area, you will be happy to know that our educational system has been listening.  As most of you know, our lovely school did not pass the building code earthquake test.  Due to this scary fact, we qualify for a re-build!  Apparently, they will be breaking ground this year.  There will of course be MUCH more info on this subject as we get closer and closer to actualization.....   In the meanwhile, what would our children do if there IS an earthquake during school hours?  Well, thanks to Southern California Earthquake Centre at USC, our school will be partisapating in a province-wide earthquake drill:

At 10:00 a.m. on January 26, 2011, thousands of British Columbians will "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" in The Great British Columbia ShakeOut, the largest earthquake drill in Canadian history! Check out  http://www.shakeoutbc.ca/  for more infomation and what part you can play in it as well.

Please note that our school does do regular drills as well.

Let's see...  On to other news:
PAC meeting was on Wednesday, and it was nice to see a few new faces.  We missed our School Council member Fran, who almost always joins us.  She was at the Cedar Grove PAC meeting bidding farewell to Cathy McCubbin who is transferring to Kinickinik

Nit-Checkers Needed

We have been given back the privilige to g into the schools and check our children's classrooms for nits (lice eggs), but without the volunteers, it will once again quickly spread.  I wasn't feeling quite up to par today, and everyone else was away.... so no nit-check happened today.  If you are interested in helping out, please call Jackie at the school:   604-886-2612   I can show you what to do if you have never done it before, no worries.
